Security architecture and permissions can be one of the more complex aspects of Salesforce, but the Summer ‘24 release rolls out several new features to help admins better visualize and manage their security model. In this overview, we’ll look at three new interfaces that summarize your users’ permissions, permission sets’ configuration, and public group usage.
User Access Summary
Summer ‘24 introduces a new view to help admins better track which permissions are available to a user. Rather than looking through each permission set, profile, public group, or queue individually, admins can use the User Access Summary on a user’s detail page to see their user, object, field, and custom permissions as well as public group and queue membership – all in one place!
Permission Set Summary
Reviewing the permissions included in a permission set is now easier using the Permission Set Summary. By navigating to a permission set or permission set group and clicking “View Summary,” admins can see the user, object, field, and custom permissions that are enabled for it in a single display. The Related Permission Set Groups tab also shows which permission set groups include the permission set and vice versa.
Public Group Access Summary
Ever wish you had a “Where is this used?” button on public groups? The Public Group Access Summary allows admins to more easily see where a public group is used and the level of access its members have. From the interface, admins can review which sharing rules reference the public group, as well as the report & dashboard folders and list views that are shared with them. If a public group is nested within another public group, admin can also see that from the “Included in Public Groups” tab.
What About a Profile Summary?
You might’ve noticed that Summer ‘24 isn’t introducing a similar interface for summarizing the permissions on a profile. In Spring ‘23, Salesforce planned on officially announcing an End of Life (EOL) for permissions on profiles, but they’ve since decided not to enforce that for Spring ‘26. So, permissions on profiles are here to stay… for now. That said, Salesforce doesn’t plan on making any future enhancements to profiles. Instead, they’ll continue to focus on permission sets and permission set groups.
Permission sets offer a lot of flexibility over profiles, but whether you’re deciding to take the plunge into a permission set centered security model or continue using a strategy of “profiles are the rule; permission sets are the exception,” the new summary views introduced by Summer ‘24 will set your admins up for success.
When are these features coming?
Salesforce will roll out the Summer ‘24 release to production orgs on the weekend of May 17, 2024, June 7, 2024, and June 14, 2024.
Users with an active sandbox on a preview instance received early access to the Summer ‘24 features starting May 10, 2024.
